Melasma, what should be done?

Melasma (melanoderma), also called as «chloasma» and «pregnancy mask», is a common adult dermal disease that causes an appearance of the brown or grayish patches of pigmentation, usually on the face.

You should avoid some known triggers such as COCs (Combined Oral Contraceptives) and HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy).

  • It is recommended to avoid a sun exposure and to use sunscreen.
  • Skin lightening creams.
  • Procedures: chemical peel, laser therapy.
  • Skin camouflage.
  • Skin lightening creams:
    • Cream with hydroquinone. Hydroquinone is a substance that prevents melanin production by skin pigment cells and it is commonly used to treat melasma. (many options are offered in cosmetics line by Zein Obagi)
    • Creams with retinoids; they improve an exfoliation (renewal) of the epidermis, even out a tone of the face
    • tonics/cleansers/serums with acids (for example, with azelaic acid, ascorbic acid and kojic acid)

all these types of skincare are prescribed only by a doctor!

Recently, scientists have found out that tranexamic acid is effective in improving an appearance of melasma.

Laser treatment is also effective.
